Recent advances in glycerol valorization via electrooxidation: Catalyst, mechanism and device

Glycerol is one of the most important biomass-based platform molecules, massively produced as a by-product in biodiesel industry. Its high purification cost from crude glycerol raw material limits its application and demands new strategies for valorization. Compared to conventional thermocatalytic strategies, electrocatalytic can not only enable selective conversion at mild conditions but also pair up cathodic reactions co-production with higher efficiencies. In this review, we summarize recent advances catalyst designs mechanistic understandings oxidation (GOR), aim provide an overview GOR process intrinsic structural-activity correlation inspiring future work field. The review dissected into three sections. We will first introduce efforts designing more efficient catalysts GOR, especially toward production value-added products. Then, current about reaction network based on ex-situ in-situ spectroscopic studies well theoretical works. Lastly, select some representative examples creating real electrochemical devices valorization glycerol. By summarizing these previous efforts, our vision directions field applications. Recent designs, assembled products are reviewed. detailed activities, selectivities pathways different summarized.
